2010 CENSUS
Will YOU Be Counted?
Soon you will be receiving your United States Census form in the mail. The U.S. Census occurs once every 10 years as mandated by the Constitution and seeks to count every person living in the United States, regardless of age or citizenship status. I urge you to fill out the form and send it back to the U.S. Census Bureau by Census Day, April 1st.
The Census is integral to the economic and social prosperity of the State. The State receives billions of dollars every year for social service, education and transportation programs that are tied directly to the State’s headcount. It is estimated that for every person not counted, the State loses over $1,000 a year – dollars which we cannot afford to lose in these dire economic times.
In addition, population distributions affect the development of future public and private infrastructure in Connecticut. Highways are planned, schools are built and new businesses are attracted to the State based on Connecticut’s most recent demographics.
Our system of political representation is also rebalanced every 10 years based on Census statistics – Congress is reapportioned and the Connecticut State Legislature will undergo redistricting next year as a result of Census 2010.
The impact of the Census on Connecticut is immense. I urge you to do your part and return your U.S. Census form. For further information on the Census, please visit the State’s website, www.ct.gov/census2010. - Governer M. Jodi Rell
